Second-quarter scoring drought too much for Nicholls women to overcome in loss to Grambling

The Nicholls basketball team dropped its final pre-conference game of the season, falling 69-50 at Grambling on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss dropped Nicholls to 6-6 on the season while Grambling improved to 5-5.

Nicholls managed leads twice in the game at 5-4 on a short jumper in the lane by Lexi Alexander and at 7-6 on another Alexander basket.

The Lady Colonels went on to trail only 14-11 after one quarter but a scoring drought of 6:03 in the second quarter was too much for Nicholls to overcome.

During that span, the Lady Tigers turned a 16-14 edge into a 30-16 lead.

The 14-0 run for Grambling consisted of a Kahia Warmsley free throw and layup, a layup and jumper by Anijah Grant, a 3-pointer and layup by Jordaynia Ivie, and a jumper by Douthsine Prien.

Warmsley, the only double-figure scorer for the Lady Tigers with 10 points in 18 minutes of action, saw her first action of the season for Grambling. The former Tulane player was awaiting a ruling to allow second-time transfers immediate eligibility without having to seek a waiver.

A Britiya Curtis layup ended the scoring drought for Nicholls, making the score 30-16 with 1:05 left in the second quarter as the Lady Colonels went on to trail 34-18 at halftime.

Grambling’s biggest lead of the third quarter came at 24 points at 55-31 on a jumper by Amanda Blake at the 1:46 mark.

The biggest lead of the game came at 26 points with 4:02 left in the game on a fastbreak basket by Mosley.

Each team committed numerous turnovers. Nicholls had 21 turnovers and Grambling 25.

The Lady Tigers connected on 25 of 59 shots (42.4 percent) from the field, including only 1 of 18 (5.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Nicholls was 19 of 66 (28.8 percent) from the field, including 5 of 24 (20.8 percent) from 3-point range.

The Lady Tigers out-rebounded Nicholls 47-36,

Alexander and Mikayla Etienne each scored 13 points and six rebounds to pace Nicholls.

Brenda McKinney had a game-high eight rebounds for Grambling.

The Lady Colonels will be off until January 4 when they host Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference opener.
