Alvarez drives in total of 10 runs in Nicholls’ double-header sweep of Grambling

Grambling scored 12 runs in the second game of a double-header against Nicholls. The Colonels scored that many in just the fifth inning.

It all added up to a 24-12 win for Nicholls in a game that ended after seven innings due to the run-rule.

Nicholls (15-3) swept the double-header by defeating the Tigers 13-2 in eight innings in the opening game Saturday on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray Didier Field.

Much of the damage over the course of the double-header was done by Edgar Alvarez. In the two games combined, the Nicholls first baseman had five hits in six official at-bats, scored four runs, hit a three-run homer and drove in a total of 10 runs.

After losing the first game by 11 runs, the Tiger seemed like they might gain revenge with a four-run first inning to open the game.

Grambling opened the inning with back-to-back singles but one runner was picked off of second base and another thrown out trying to steal second base, creating two quick outs.

Nicholls starter Haden Luke hit the next two batters. A single by Julian Murphy loaded the bases. Walks to Trevor Hatton and Kevin Hall each allowed runs to score.

That chased Luke, who was relieved by Michael Guerrero.

Chris Marcellus greeted Guerrero with a two-run single to left field to make it 4-0.

Grambling added two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. Meanwhile, Nicholls countered with two runs in the second and one in the third to make the score 7-3.

The Colonels matched Grambling’s entire run total with a seven-run fourth inning. The big blow in the inning was a three-run home run by Garrett Felix.

The fourth inning was just a prelude for what was to come in the fifth inning.

The Colonels sent 17 batters to the plate in scoring their 12 runs. Tiger pitchers hit one Nicholls batter and walked six in the inning. The Colonels collected six hits in the inning and there was one error.

Three of the runs were forced in on walks. Felix, Narvin Booker Jr., Parker Coddou, and Erick Ordonez all had run-scoring singles. Alvarez, who drove in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice when he popped out to third base, later drove in two more runs in the inning on a double.

Grambling would go on the score five runs in the seventh inning to make the final of 24-12 look more like a football score, but it did no good to the Tigers’ baseball record, which dropped to 2-11 on the season.

Gavin Galy, the third of five pitchers for Nicholls, picked up the win. He tossed three innings, allowing one run and three hits, while striking out one.

Grambling starter Mason Martinez suffered the loss. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out three.

Nicholls 13, Grambling 2: Alvarez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to bring the game to a conclusion due to the run-rule. He also had a run-scoring single and a two-run single in the game.

Basiel Williams had a two-run single, while Kaden Amundson and Alvarez each added RBI-singles to stake the Colonels to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

MaCrae Kendrick had a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Amundson drove in a run in the sixth and Alvarez added two more RBI in the inning.

Nicholls starter Jacob Mayers (2-0) picked up the win. He allowed two runs on one hit and five walks, while striking out seven in five innings.

Grambling starter Randy Reyes (0-1) took the loss. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out six.

The teams close out the series with a single game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
