A road trip to southern Texas proved to be a rough one for both the Nicholls men’s and women’s tennis teams.
The Nicholls men lost by identical scores of 5-2 to Incarnate Word on Saturday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Nicholls women also dropped both of their matches, falling 5-2 to UIW and 7-0 to Corpus Christi.
The results dropped the Nicholls men to 0-3 in the Southland Conference and 6-6 overall. The Nicholls women fell to 0-4 in the SLC and 6-6 overall.
Harry Collins was the only member of the Nicholls tennis teams to win singles matches in both outings.
Playing on Court 2, Collins defeated Emilio Vila of UIW, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. He also defeated Etienne Marty of Corpus Christi, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play among the men, Incarnate Word gained the point by winning all three matches.
Along with Collins, the other Colonel to win his match was Antonio Sasso on Court 5 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
The team of Avery Zavala and Etienne defeated the Nicholls duo of Quentin Lamothe and Omar Morsy, 6-3. Antoine Vicaire and Iannis Fernandes topped the team of Collins and Kotaro Matsumura, 6-3. In the other doubles match, Lucas Schurdevin and Nicolas Trebuchet defeated the Nicholls team of Danail Banov and Antonio Sasso, 6-4.
In singles play, it was Zavala over Morsy on Court 1, (6-4, 6-4); Schurdevin won on Court 3 over Lamothe (6-2, 6-0); Fernandes defeated Banov on Court 4 (6-3, 4-6, 6-0); and Trebuchet beat Matsumura (6-3, 6-4).
For the women at UIW, the Cardinals gained the point from doubles play, taking two of three matches.
The No. 1 team of Sofia Franco Salcedo and Isid Hernandez Leon defeated the Nicholls twosome of Constanza Cruz and Carla Bouygues, 6-3. UIW’s No. 2 team of Estefania Gonzalez and Ine Lamprect beat the Nicholls duo of Lea Grinberg and Aada Inna, 6-0.
The Nicholls team of Noemie Piquet and Dareen Hassan defeated McKenzy Byfield and Barbara Havlov, 6-0.
Nicholls’ two wins in singles play came on Court 5 and Court 6.
Cruz defeated Byfield, 7-5, 6-3, while Piquet outlasted Havlova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In other matches, it was Franco Salcedo over Bouygues (6-2, 3-6, 6-2); Gonzalez defeated Lui QianYu (6-2, 6-3); Hernandez Leon beat Safarova (7-6, 6-1); and Lamprect topped Grinberg (6-3, 6-0).
In men’s play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the only other point by Nicholls other than Collins came in singles play on Court 5 with Sasso’s 6-3, 7-5 win over Antoine Vicaire.
The Islanders took all three matches in doubles play.
Avery Zavala and Marty defeated Lamothe and Morsy (6-3); Vicaire and Iannis Fernandez topped Matsumura and Collins (6-3); Shurdevin and Trebuchet topped Banov and Sasso (6-4).
In other singles play, it was Zavala over Morsy (6-4, 6-4); Schurdevin over Lamothe (6-2, 6-0); Fernandes over Banov (6-3, 4-6, 6-0); and Trebuchet over Matsumura (6-3, 6-4).
In women’s action at Corpus Christi, the Islanders won all three doubles matches and all six singles events.
The team of Emma Aucagne and Naomi Moi McKenzie defeated Cruz and Bouygues, 6-1. Ana Veroux and Palina Saulevich topped Grinberg and Inna, 6-4. It was Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rubevska over Piquet and Hassan, 6-2.
In singles play, it was Aucagne over Bouygues (6-1, 6-1); McKenzie over QianYu (6-3, 6-2;
Veroux over Grinberg (6-1, 6-0; Cherfus over Inna (6-1, 6-4); Rublevska over Piquet (6-1, 6-3); and Saulevich over Hassan (6-2, 6-0).
