Colonels use gap power, pitching by committee in 12-4 win over Southern Jaguars

The Nicholls baseball team had double the fun in the Colonels’ 12-4 win over Southern on Tuesday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray Didier Field.

Four doubles by Colonels hitters scored five of their nine runs in the win.

On the mound, the team used a pitcher-by-committee method. Having not played a game since last Wednesday, Nicholls conference weekend starters Jacob Mayers, Jack Nelson, and Michael Quevedo pitched one inning each respective over the first three innings.

It was not only the weekend starters who go work on the mound. Nicholls used a different pitcher in each of the game’s nine innings.

Southern (18-23) struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

A double by Khyle Radcliffe and a single by Kameron Byrd off of Dallis Moran, the fourth pitcher used by the Colonels by that point in the game, put runners on the corners with no outs.

After Byrd was thrown out trying to steal second base, Ryan Ollison was hit with a pitch. A double to right field by Michael Latulas produced the first run of the game. With two outs, Logan Sanders reached base on a throwing error by Nicholls third baseman Drake Anderson, allowing another run to score. The final run of the inning came on a single by White to drive in Latulas.

Nicholls (28-16) answered quickly with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring both runs with two outs.

Garrett Felix led off the inning with a walk. After two outs, Anderson reached base on a throwing error by Ollison, the Southern third baseman, scoring Felix, with Anderson advancing to third base on the play. A double by Narvin Booker scored Anderson to pull the Colonels to within one run.

The Colonels took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, all again with two outs.

Walks to Parker Coddou and Edgar Alvarez put two runners on board before Coddou was forced out at third base when Gerardo Villarreal reached base on a fielder’s choice. After Felix flied out, Basiel Williams walked to load the bases.

Cade Crosby singled through the right side to drive in two runs to put Nicholls on top 4-3. Crosby was caught in a rundown trying to steal second, with Williams scoring from third base to increase the Colonels’ lead to 5-3.

After Southern scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 5-4, the Colonels exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 9-4.

Three run-scoring doubles by the Colonels produced the four runs.

Singles by Edard Alvarez and Villarreal to open the inning set up a two-run double to right center field by Felix.

Erick Ordonez and Anderson added back-to-back run-scoring singles for the 9-4 Nicholls lead.

Nicholls tacked on three runs in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Anderson.

Auturo Rodriguez (2-2), the fifth of the nine pitchers used by Nicholls, was awarded the win. In his one inning, he allowed one hit and one walk, with one strikeout.

Peyton Huff (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.
