Former Nicholls Freshman Pitcher of the Year Mayers announces plans to play for LSU

It didn’t take Jacob Mayers long to find a new home.

Less than two weeks after entering the transfer portal, the former national Freshman Pitcher of the Year announced via social media that he is transferring to LSU.

The top freshman hurler in 2023, the lanky 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-hander was 14-2 in 31 starts for the Colonels over two seasons, with a 3.26 earned run average with 211 strikeouts.

As a true freshman, the St. Amant High School product posted a 9-1 record with a 2.02 ERA. He allowed 44 hits and 21 runs, 17 of which were earned with 58 walks, while striking out 105 batters.

Nicholls won the Southland Conference regular season and conference titles in Mayers’ freshman year and advanced to the NCAA regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mayers pitched 5 2/3 innings against Alabama with eight strikeouts in a 4-3 loss to the Crimson Tide.

Mayers’ numbers were not as good in his sophomore season as he moved into the role as Nicholls’ Friday night starter. He went 5-1 with a 4.58 ERA. He allowed 39 hits and 38 runs, 36 of which were earned. Mayers struck out 106 batters but issued 76 walks.

Nicholls repeated as SLC tournament champions in 2024 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Corvallis, Oregon.

Mayers got the start in the opening game of the Corvallis Regional against UC Irvine, working only 1 1/3 innings with a no decision in an eventual 13-12 loss.

Nicholls posted a record of 72-46 overall, including 31-17 in Mayers’ two seasons with the Colonels.
