Colonels pound out total of 31 runs, 41 hits in three-game SLC road sweep of Islanders

For the second game in a row, Nicholls came up with a big late inning to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

One day after the Nicholls used a seven-run eighth inning to defeat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 13-8, the Colonels came up with seven runs in the ninth inning to beat the Islanders 11-4 Saturday afternoon in Corpus Christi for a three-game Southland Conference sweep.

The win evened the Colonels’ SLC record to 3-3 and 20-10 overall. The Islanders fell to 2-4 and 13-19 overall.

Over the course of the three games, the Colonels scored 31 runs on 41 hits.

Nicholls led 4-2 before the Islanders scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the game to the ninth tied 4-4.

Singles by MaCrae Kendrick and Erick Ordonez opened the inning. After Maddox Thornton replaced Samuel Feltz on the mound for the Islanders, Kade Turnage reached base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

A Narvin Booker single scored the first two runs of the inning for a 6-4 Nicholls lead. After a wild pitch produced another run, a sacrifice fly by Parker Coddou to make it 8-4.

Following a walk by Edgar Alvarez and a single by Gerardo Vallarreal, a walk by Garrett Felix loaded the bases again and chased Thornton in favor of Jack Hill.

A sacrifice fly by Aaron Biediger drove in a run and an error on the play added another to make it 10-4. Felix scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Nicholls reliever Nico Saltaformaggio gave up a leadoff double to Chance Reisdorph before getting the next three Islander batters out to end the game.

Colonel starter Michael Quevedo got the win. He allowed two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.

The loss went to Feltz (2-2). He allowed two runs on two hits without getting an out to open the ninth inning.

Nicholls 13, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8: The Colonels exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning as part of a 17-hit attack to take the second game of the three-game series.

The seven runs for Nicholls in the big eighth inning came on seven hits as the Colonels sent 12 batters to the plate.

Ordonez, Coddou, Edgar Alvarez, Villareal, and Felix all drove in runs in the inning. Booker, who opened the inning with a double, hit a two-run triple to drive in the final two runs of the inning and a 13-5 Nicholls lead.

Isaac Webb hit a three-run home run for Corpus Christi in the bottom of the eighth but the 13-8 margin was as close as the Islanders would get.

Coddou hit the first pitch of the game out of the park for a home run for a quick 1-0 Nicholls lead and it was the only run for the Colonels through five innings.

Meanwhile, the Islanders took a 4-1 lead before Nicholls produced a run in the sixth inning and four in the seventh before its big eighth inning.

Players with multiple hits for Nicholls in the game included Felix with four, Coddou and Booker each with three hits, and Alvarez and Villarreal with two apiece.

Freshman Dallis Moran (1-0), the third of five Nicholls pitchers, picked up the first win of his Colonel career. He allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out three in two innings.

Jack Hill (1-2), the third of six pitchers for the Islanders, took the loss. Hill allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Nicholls 7, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3: A three-run third inning gave Nicholls a lead it would not relinquish to hand the Colonels their first Southland Conference game of the season while snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, a total of four Nicholls pitchers allowed a collective one earned run to win the opening game of the three-game series on Friday night.

An RBI-double by Booker broke a scoreless tie in the third inning before Alvarez and Villarreal added run-scoring singles to give Nicholls its 3-0 advantage.

Nicholls held a 7-1 lead before the Islanders produced two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and then gave the Colonels some anxious moments in the ninth inning.

With a runner on second base and two outs, Saltaformaggio walked Garrett Gruell. Saltaformaggio was replaced by Gavin Galy, who hit Reisdorph with a pitch to load the bases and bring the potential tying run to the plate.

Devin Desandro went to the mound for Nicholls and struck out Josh Blout swinging to end the game.

Nicholls starter Jack Nelson (1-1) picked up the win. He allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks, while striking out eight in five innings. Desandro earned his second save of the year.

Islanders starter Matthew Watson (1-4) suffered the loss. He allowed four earned runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out five in five innings.
