It didn’t take long for the Nicholls baseball team to quickly take a double-header from visiting Southeastern Baptist College.
After taking the opener 10-0 in a run-rule game, the Colonels scored three runs in the first inning before exploding for six runs in the second inning on the way to a 13-1 win and a sweep Wednesday afternoon at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray Didier Field.
Nicholls improved to 13-3 while SBC, a school in Laurel, Miss., which is part of the National Christian College Athletic Association, dropped to 5-9.
The first two runners to reach base for Nicholls in the first inning were hit by pitches. A single by Brayden Kuriger, a wild pitch, and a Gerardo Villarreal sacrifice fly produced the three runs.
In the six-run second inning, the big blow was a three-run triple by Narvin Booker Jr., giving the Colonels a 9-0 lead.
The only run for the Chargers in the double-header came in the top of the sixth inning on a run-scoring double by Craig Duplantis.
Nicholls scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Drake Anderson, along with RBI-singles by Vallarreal and Booker to again put the run-rule into effect.
Chase Richter, the second of five pitchers for Nicholls, picked up the win, working one scoreless inning.
SBC starter Jonathan Nicholson, who lasted only two-thirds of an inning took the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.
Nicholls 10, Southeastern Baptist 0: The Colonels came up with three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth on their way to the run-rule win after seven innings over the Chargers.
The Colonels scored runs in each of the first two innings on a run-scoring single by Edgar Alvarez in the first inning, and an RBI-single by Kade Turnage in the second.
After Chargers pitcher Cody Farr got two quick outs to open the third inning, he walked four-straight batters to allow a run to score. When Jayden Kay walked with the bases loaded, the Colonels extended their lead to 3-0.
Booker followed with a two-run single to give Nicholls a 5-0 lead.
Nicholls pounded out two doubles, a triple, and a home run in the Colonels’ four-run fourth inning.
Parker Coddou drove in the first run with a double following a leadoff triple by Erick Ordonez. A double by Aaron Biediger drove in the next run with one out. Cade Crosby added to the lead with a two-run home run.
Sam Hill picked up the win (2-0). The Nicholls starter allowed two hits while striking out eight in four innings.
Nick Fields (1-0) pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save.
Rylie Reynolds (0-1), the first of four SBC pitchers, suffered the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout in two innings.
