Colonels take on USM, South Alabama on road before home series versus Southern

The Nicholls baseball team will get a chance to play at a pair of nice midweek venues when the Colonels take on the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of South Alabama.

Nicholls will take on Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. at MGM Park in Biloxi. MGM Park is the home of the Biloxi Shuckers, a Double-A team in the Southern League.

“I think our kids are excited about it,” Nicholls coach Mike Silva said. “It should be sold out in Biloxi on Tuesday night. There’ll be a really good crowd and it’s pretty much a home game for them, but our kids get excited to go play over there in the Double-A stadium.”

After the USM game, it’s off to Mobile for a 6:30 p.m. contest Wednesday at Stanky Field in

Mobile. The stadium is named after the former big-league player and manager, who later served as the longtime baseball coach at South Alabama.

“South Alabama’s got a great venue as well and they’re two really good opponents. They are regional-caliber teams. Southern Miss was in a super regional last year. South Alabama is one of the most consistent college baseball teams probably the last decade under Coach Mark Calvi. We’ve got our work cut out for us, but it’s good for us to continue to see better competition and go out execute,” said Silva.

The Colonels go in the week 7-1 on the season and on a four-game winning streak following a three-game home sweep of Eastern Illinois.

Southern Miss goes into the week 6-2 on the season.

The Golden Eagles broke a tie game with a run-scoring double in the sixth inning to defeat Missouri State 5-4 on Sunday to take two of three games in a series against the Bears in Hattiesburg.

South Alabama enters the week 6-2 on the season.

The Jaguars are coming off an 11-1 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday to take two of three games in a series in Mobile.

USA scored in six different innings to back the pitching of Cam Hill, who allowed five hits in seven innings of work.

While Nicholls and USM didn’t play a year ago, the Colonels and South Alabama faced each other twice in 2023.

South Alabama won both games, defeating Nicholls 5-4 in Mobile, and 10-8 in Thibodaux.

In the game in Thibodaux, the Colonels led 8-3 through six innings. South Alabama came back to tie the contest 8-8 to send the game to extra innings. The Jaguars scored two runs in the 10th inning for the win and a season sweep over Nicholls.

Nicholls will be back at home when the Colonels host Southern University on Friday and Saturday. First pitch for each game is slated for 6 p.m.

The Colonels will play Southern in Baton Rouge at 1 p.m. Sunday.
