Nicholls women open SLC tennis championships with upset of Southeastern

The Nicholls women’s tennis team, which didn’t win a Southland Conference match all season, opened play in the conference tournament with a 4-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday morning at the McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio.

Nicholls went into the conference championship tournament at the lowest seed at No. 10 and upset Southeastern, the No. 7 seed.

During the regular season, Nicholls fell to SLU, 5-2.

Nicholls advances to take on McNeese, the No. 2 seed, at 2 p.m. Friday.

The Nicholls No. 3 doubles team of Betija Dusele and Dareen Hassan lost to the SLU duo of Bogi Csordas and Alba Perez, 6-0, before the Lady Colonels rallied to take the next two matches to earn the point from doubles play.

Carla Bouygues and Constanza Cruz, the No. 1 Nicholls doubles team, defeated the Southeastern twosome of Bente Bierma and Leana Gomez, 6-3.

The Nicholls No. 2 doubles team of Lea Grinberg and Aada Inna clinched doubles play for the Lady Colonels with a 6-4 win over Taisia Bolsova and Kate Oborina, 6-4.

Grinberg took the first singles match on Court 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Oborina.

Bouygues, on Court 2, claimed the next match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gomez.

After Nicholls’ Noemie Piquet lost to SLU’s Claudia Di Leonardo, 3-6, 6-2, on Court 5, the Lady Colonels cliched the match when Lui QianYu, on Court 1, defeated Perez, 6-4, 6-3.
