While the LSU Keyth Talley Invitational track meet held Saturday in Baton Rouge may not have provided the large number of personal bests for many of the Nicholls track athletes as the Louisiana Classics a week earlier, it still served its needed purpose.
“This meet felt more like a regular season meet, where you some big highlights, some other people that were just consistent, and then some people there’s some stuff we gotta work on,” Nicholls track coach Stefanie Slekis said. “A very solid meet across the board.
“The first meet, there was a lot of people doing really well. I think we opened up well and then you’re a little bit tired with the training block we’re in right now. We switched people around what events they were doing. But overall, it was a very solid, good meet.”
Among the highlights for the Nicholls men was Amari Godette’s performance in 100 meters and 200 meters.
He ran the 100 meters in a time of 10.43, while his time in the 200 was 21.23.
“Amari ran his fastest wind-legal 100 meters. He ran 10:43 and that’s the fastest he’s run with legal wind and the 100,” Slekis noted.
In the javelin, Gavin Windham had a personal-best throw of 52.08 meters.
“That should be enough to get him in the conference final,” Slekis said Windham’s effort. “He’ll probably be ranked fourth or fifth in the conference right now. If he can throw 52 meters at the conference meet, it should get him into the final, so that’s a big step up for him.”
In the men’s 600 meters, Nick Coonan-Bailey set a personal record of 1:26.88, as did William Bellina with a time of 1:27.96.
Nisaiah Bennett set a personal mark in the 400 meters with a time of 50.74. Kyshun Webster’s time of 52.59 was also a personal best.
Wesley O’Neal set a personal best in the 1500 with a time of 4:23.87.
On the women’s side, Kassidy Besson set a personal record in the 1500 with a time of 4:46.25.
“I think she’s gonna be right on the bubble to make the 1500 final cause she ran a second-and-a-half off in the mile indoors. So she’s getting there in 1500,” Slekis said of Besson.
Another highlight among the women was Danya Satterfield with a time of 14.49 in the 100-meter hurdles which was a half-second off of her personal record.
An area that could perhaps use a bit of tweaking is the men’s 4 x 100 relay team.
“We did better in our handoffs this week, but we weren’t as aggressive in our running, so we didn’t run faster than last week. If put both of those weekends together, when we get to Southeastern and Rice, our men’s 4 by 100 is looking really good because all those guys set PRs in their individual events,” Slekis said.
